A Forceful Presence Of Christianity In Medieval Wo

A Forceful Presence Of Christianity In Medieval Wo A Forceful Presence of Christianity in Medieval World After the collapse of the Roman Empire and the establishment of the Germanic states, a new European civilization slowly emerged in the ninth and tenth centuries of the Early Middle Ages. Charlemagne, a descendant of a Germanic tribe converted to Christianity, had symbolized three chief factors of the new European civilization. They included the German tribes, the classical tradition, and Christianity (Spielvogel, 235). Christianity thrived in the medieval western world throughout the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries. This new society, called Christendom, contributed to ?a period of recovery and growth for Western civilization, characterized by a greater sense of security and a burst of energy and enthusiasm? (Spielvogel, 237). In fact, during that period, the influence of Christianity was a primary determinant in three areas of medieval society. Christianity dominated the rise of universities, which resulted not only in developing well-educated clergy but also in teaching all students the essence of Christian principles. The Metropolitan 'M' Stamp. The dominant form of art, created in gothic cathedrals, symbolized the preoccupation of a medieval Christian community. In Manorialism, even the lord and vassal structure was greatly influenced, as peasants were relieved from labor specifically to celebrate holy days and other religious feasts.?The desire to introduce a systematic approach to knowledge greatly affected the formal study of religion that we call theology? (Spielvogel, 277). Christianity?s importance in medieval society was exhibited through theology?s central role in the European intellectual world. Theology was referred to as ?queen of the sciences?, reigning in monastic, cathedral and new universities (Spielvogel, 277). Medieval universities were educational guilds, or corporations that produced educated and trained individuals. Although monastic schools were most prevalent in the ninth t hrough the eleventh century, cathedral schools extended into the eleventh century. The primary purpose of these schools...

Avoiding Stereotypes in Writing

Avoiding Stereotypes in Writing Avoiding Stereotypes in Writing Avoiding Stereotypes in Writing By Catherine Osborn It is easy to fall into the trap of using language that can be construed as racist or sexist. Here are a few tips to stay away from this type of writing. Avoid sexist language. When you know your audience varies, stay away from words that are gender specific. Use â€Å"their† instead of â€Å"his† or â€Å"anyone† instead of â€Å"a man†. You’d be surprised how many people take these sorts of things the wrong way. Avoid ethnic and racial stereotypes. You can be accurate without being biased. For example, it could be considered impolite to say Oriental; you should say Asian or better yet, the specific country such as Japanese, Korean, etc†¦. Be careful not to let religious stereotypes creep into your writing. Such as referring to a banker as Jewish, of course. This is too biased. Biases against age and sexual orientation are also frowned upon. In all these cases, it is best to well, use your best judgment. Avoid political bias and stereotypes in case you want your audienceTo read your content under a neutral point of view. This is especially important in business writing contexts. Research your facts and dont include statements you believe to be true just because the majority of people also believe so. Remember that people in different regions or countries might have a different understanding regarding what is considered sexiest or racist. When in doubt, scratch that. I'm attaching a document. Read the background information about bacteria, antibiotics, and the evolution of antibiotic resistance at this site - Essay Example water or food) and susceptible person. If any of these factors are changed or eradicated the infection will not spread widely and the epidemic will be stopped. For example we can increase immunity by the vaccination or break the way of transmission by the provision of safe food or potable water. Definite doagnosis could be provided only after laboratory tests but we can suppose several gastrointestinal diseases. There are bacterial dysentery (shigellosis), protozoal dysentery (amebiasis), salmonellosis, enteroviral infection and staphylococcal intoxication. Correspondingly possible microbial pathogens could be named as shigellae (various species and strains), amoeba hystolitica, salmonella spp., eneroviridae spp. and staphylococcus auresus. Nevertheless the incubation period for staphylococcal intoxication usually is less than 12 hours. In the described case the data about the time frame of clinical signs are omitted thus we could take this type of microbial poisoning in the account. To avoid such cases there is necessary to improve hygienic skills of family members especially in the part of cooking and food preserving, educate them about the threats of microbial food-borne diseases. Proper thermal processing of food products, avoiding food with expired date or signs of spoiling could be important also. Hand washing is a key element of infection control and there is important to provide adequate treatment for family members having chronic intestinal infections. 3. Weese JS, Rousseau J. Videogame Addiction Essay Example for Free

Videogame Addiction Essay Jeffrey Stark knew he was in trouble when his grades dropped from 90s to 70s and he had lost all his friends. He was spending far too much time and effort feeding his addiction. Stark wasnt shooting heroin or drinking alcohol. He was playing computer games. Getting hooked on computer games has stripped me of countless valuable hours which could have been spent studying, says Stark, 18, of London, Ont. I am now antisocial and have very few friends. (Andrew Flynn) This story is not a unique one. Video games have been known to consume people to the point that their lives are falling apart. Video game addiction has wrecked people mentally, ruined professional careers, and destroyed marriages. Video game addiction is a growing epidemic around the world. It is an issue that needs to be dealt with so thousands of people can get the help that they need. Jun. 28Skip to 2012: Lindsay Lohan checks into treatment because the actress just cant stop hitting the barsthe falling block-bars on Nintendo Tetris. A 33-year-old office worker is fired because he wouldnt stop playing World of Warcraft 3 on the job. He sues and is awarded back pay and reinstatement, along with the accommodation that he be allowed at least three raids per day on the computer game. These scenarios could come to be if the American Medical Association classifies video game addiction as a mental condition tantamount to dependence on drugs and alcohol. (Arizona Daily Star) Now this might seem far fetched to some people but scenarios like these could be a very real and frightening possibility. When video game addiction becomes a real medical disease, people all around the world will be affected. For example, if this happens video game addicts will be given breaks to get their fix similar to smokers, and with the fact that seven out of ten homes in America have a video gam e console in them, this would be harmful to everyone. Employers everywhere will lose out on possible income they can make. In Tucson mental-health experts welcomed the study, saying  the problems are real and on the rise. But some devout gamers say the issue is overhyped. It is a valid addiction, said Paul Gallant, a clinical outreach coordinator for Sierra Tucson, a treatment center for addictions and mental disorders. He said hes seen a 20 percent increase in calls regarding compulsive gamers in the past 18 months. One case involved a 22-year-old college student who spent up to 20 hours on a computer game every day, and had failed classes and lost his job. It meets many of the classic criteria for process addiction, Gallant said. Many people who doubt that these cases are addictions do not understand neurochemistry or the working of the addictive brain. Many people feel that unless theres ingestion of a mind- or mood-altering substancewhether it be heroin, cocaine or alcoholwithout that, addiction cannot be present, and thats a lie. Video game addiction can be very disruptive, costing gamers jobs and relationships, said Christi Cessna, Sierra Tucsons director of marketing and intake. Its had a serious impact on lives, and frankly thats one of the reasons the (American Psychiatric Association) is looking at it as a diagnosis, she said. (Phil Villarreal) Video game addiction has a severe effect on your social life. Its similar to the idea of Internet addiction in that people are using video games to kind of disassociate from their lives in some way, Cessna said. We are getting calls, which is a challenge because no program out there specializes in video game addiction itself. Those hooked on gaming also may suffer from additional problems, such as anti-social behavior and depression, she said. (Phil Villarreal) This can be very disruptive costing people jobs and relationships and it one of the main reasons that the American Psychiatric Association. People have been using games to distance themselves from reality for decades but now with the type of games that are out now, one such game is World Of Warcraft. World of Warcraft or WOW for short, is a MMO RPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game) where you create a character from a number of different races and level up and go on quests. This game thats set in a fantasy world where someone can literally make a second life. For many people out there life might not be ideal and lots of gamers seek out happiness in games which is perfectly fine and healthy to an extent, but some people take it too far. For most hardcore addicts, they  will willingly forgo food, hygiene, and jobs to play a game instead. One case involved a 22-year-old college student who spent up to 20 hours on a computer game every day, and had failed classes and lost his job. to go back to this quote from earlier, video game addiction needs more attention and people need help; just like alcoholics have AA for help with their addiction, video game addicts need something similar. Although in recent years video games have got a bad rap. They have been accused of causing people to be violent and things of that nature which is untrue as proven in USA Todays article Study the Player, not the Video game, If youre worried about a video game turning your son or daughter into a killer, dont worry about that, says psychologist Patrick Markey of Villanova (Pa.) University. But is your kid moody, impulsive, or are they unfriendly? Its probably not the best idea to have that child play violent video games. With all that being video games can be used for good. In the past the authors have referred to games as good â€Å"learning engines.† Here they argue that games are good learning engines because they are first good assessment engines.Games require the kind of thinking that we need in the 21st century because they use actual learning as the basis for assessment. They test not only current knowledge and skills, but also preparation for future learning. They measur e 21st century skills like collaboration, innovation, production, and design by tracking many different kinds of information about a student over time. As an example of how epistemic games can be used as assessment tools, the authors describe a game they developed called Urban Science, in which players work as urban planners who are creating proposals for the development of an area adjacent to a large wetland. Epistemic games can be used to test whether students can solve complex problem using 21st century skills. Thus the authors suggest that the road to better schools starts by making the tests in school more like the games that students are already playing out of school. (James Gee, David Shaffer) Video games have been used by the military to help soldiers become better on the battlefield, in recent years schools have been pushing more interactive learning video games to keep students interested and having fun which in turn make you learn more. In conclusion video game addiction is a real epidemic. It affects millions of people every day. It has been know to ruin professional careers, destroy personal relationships, and have a grave effect on someones social life. Currently today there really isnt a good option for gamers to go to get help. Alcoholics and many other forms of recognized addictions have large and very effective and helpful organizations dedicated to alleviated peoples addictions yet videos game addicts do not. This is an issue that needs to be addressed because if it isnt, it will affect us all. Bibliography Flynn, Andrew. Its No-Win for Those Hooked on Games. Toronto Star. 27 Apr 2002: L9. Malcolm X Essay -- Americanism, discrimination

A Dream Or A Nightmare   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å" No, I’m not an American. I’m one of the 22 million people who are victims of Americanism, one if the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I’m not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or flag-saluter, or a flag waver. No, not I. I am speaking to you as a victim of the American system. And I see America through the eyes of a victim. I don’t see any American dream. I see an American nightmare!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  --Malcolm X   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I can see why Malcolm would refer to the American dream as a nightmare. We all have to understand that Malcolm and Martin Luther King came from very different class levels. Malcolm came from a lower class of African Americans. Malcolm was a criminal who spent time in jail and he was from a poor neighbor hood. Malcolm was educated by the environment that surrounded him. Malcolm often preached to the blacks to about self respect, and dignity. I think Malcolm know and understood this more than King because of Malcolm’s upbringing. Malcolm gave very derogatory speeches. Malcolm was an intelligent speaker. In Malcolm’s speeches you can see and hear the anger that the white people have caused the African American people. I’m sure that Malcolm was not the only African American person who had the same view points or felt the same way. It’s just that Malcolm had the nerve to speak up for what he believed. At this time, black people were fighting for equal rights. Every person handles stress differently. Malcolm was voicing his opinion based upon the times and his personal experiences.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In this article, I read a part of another speech from Malcolm that made statements against the white people. I think Malcolm had every right to make these comments about white Americans. Malcolm got the reputation that he was a racist. I believe that he and all the other black people had every right to be racist. White American people were being racist for not allowing the African Americans to have equal rights. So, why was it a big deal when Malcolm made racial slurs against the white Americans? It was ok for white America... ...cle was involved with her class. It makes the learning process fun and exciting for the students. The teachers make all the difference in the world. A student can learn memorize anything that a teacher lectures on. But the information is only stored temporally. If you make it fun and exciting the student not only learns but the memory lasts a life time. A Class Learns To Teach Itself   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I think that most adult classes are easier to teach because, as the article pointed out, adults have a goal for being in a class and they have other responsibilities. They don’t have the time to be goofing off. Adults are more willing to learn and don’t have to be reminded to pay attention. They have a purpose to being in class.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The teacher in this article was surprised that the class took a turn and was teaching itself. The man who lost his daughter not only respected the writing’s he was reading but also able to use his life experiences to compare and learn more about what was going on in class. I think students learn more when they can understand the material and compare it to real life experiences.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚

Nonverbal Behavior in France

The culture which I have chosen to select for examples of nonverbal behaviors typically associated with that culture would be the French. The French culture proved to be rich and plentiful in a variety of interesting nonverbal behaviors. One of the more classical French gestures would be the French pout. The French pout expresses disgust, disdain and many of what was described as â€Å"just about any negative emotion beginning with â€Å"dis† (French, 2007). To pout or â€Å"faire la moue† one pushes their lips out while bringing them back in, in a facial expression like a smooch or what could look like a quick pucker. According to my research, a bored facial expression is common to accompany this pout look. The nonverbal action or behavior for â€Å"let’s get the hell out of here† is represented by holding one’s hands out, with palms down while smacking one hand down onto the other (French, 2007). The word for this nonverbal action in French is â€Å"On se tire.† One of the other nonverbal gestures in France is in expressing your disbelief at what another person is saying to you, one would use his index finger, pull down the skin under one of your eyes while saying â€Å"Mon oeil!† In the research I read on this expression it stated that it was the same as if to say in America, â€Å"my foot† (French, 2007).   I personally never heard this expression so perhaps it’s not as commonly used now as it once was. Lastly, I chose a nonverbal expression that seemed kind of unusual to me. According to one of the sites I used, in French if you were saying someone was lazy you would hold out your hands, pull on an imaginary hair supposedly growing out of your hand while saying â€Å"Il a un poil dans la main† (Welcome, 2000). In the French culture, their nonverbal language and behavior can be used for ordinary conversation or for vulgar gestures. Much of the nonverbal language can look familiar while some of their nonverbal language can look unfamiliar to those outside of France. However, it has to be stated that the French definitely have a variety of interesting nonverbal expressions that can be used to enhance their conversations. References (2007). French Language. Film Critism essays

Film Critism essays Nothing is a Cuban film directed by Juan Carlos Chemata Maberti. I was able to see this film on September 10th, 2004. I enjoyed it thoroughly, although I was unable to determine why initially after seeing it. But after some carefully analyzing the film I was able to pick out several elements of the film that were almost pleasantly distressing. The movie reminded me of the chaos theory. The butterfly effect. Because the main character, a Cuban female of approximately 25 years of age alters letters in order to make it aesthetically pleasing to the mail receiver. This offered an interesting plot structure which ultimately although simple was very intriguing. The color and cinematography in which the film was produced also added to the thematic effect of the film. The plot was structured a chronological order. It was non unique in the development. But the idea and story line were highly unique and interesting. The main character works in a post office. She seems displeased with her life, which is understandable; her parents left her when she was 15 years old to go to America. They now reside in Miami and are attempting to get her a visa to come to America as well. While she is at work she will steal letters and re-phrase, revise, re-write, and modify the letters to make them more delightful to the reader. She is an amazing writer and often changes the persons life for the better. I think that she in an interesting twist is living vicariously through her recipients. They are now able to enjoy their lives as she wishes she were able to do. My favorite scene is a result of one of the womyns (Sic.) altered letters. The recipient is obviously feeling suicidal and has not been enjoying life for some time now. The main character alters the letter to her in a poetic manner almost indirectly encouraging her to commit suicide. Upon receiving the letter the womyn walks despondently she walks into her home and into her res...

Mary Easty - Salem Witch Trials

Mary Easty - Salem Witch Trials Mary Easty Facts Known for: hanged as a witch in the 1692 Salem witch trialsAge at time of Salem witch trials: about 58Dates: baptized August 24, 1634, died September 22, 1692Also known as: Mary Towne, Mary Town, Mary Esty, Mary Estey, Mary Eastey, Goody Eastie, Goody Easty, Mary Easte, Marah Easty, Mary Estick, Mary Eastick Family background: Her father was William Towne and her mother Joanna (Jone or Joan) Blessing Towne, accused once of witchcraft herself. William and Joanna arrived in America around 1640. Among Marys siblings were Rebecca Nurse (arrested March 24 and hanged June 19) and Sarah Cloyse (arrested April 4, case dismissed January 1693). Mary married Isaac Easty, a well-to-do farmer born in England, around 1655 - 1658. They had eleven children, seven alive in 1692. They lived in Topsfield, rather than either Salem Town or Village. Salem Witch Trials Rebecca Nurse, Mary Eastys sister and a well-respected matron, was denounced as a witch by Abigail Williams and arrested on March 24. Their sister, Sarah Cloyce, defended Rebecca, and was ordered arrested on April 4. Sarah was examined on April 11. A warrant was issued for Mary Eastys arrest on April 21, and she was taken into custody. The next day, she was examined by John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin, as were Nehemiah Abbott Jr., William and Deliverance Hobbs, Edward Bishop Jr. and his wife Sarah, Mary Black, Sarah Wildes, and Mary English. During Mary Eastys examination, Abigail Williams, Mary Walcott, Ann Putnam Jr., and John Indian said that she was hurting them, and that their mouths were stopt. Elizabeth Hubbard cried Goody Easty you are the woman.... Mary Easty maintained her innocence. Rev. Samuel Parris took the notes on the examination. E: I will say it, if it was my last time, I am clear of this sin.Of what sin?E: Of witchcraft. Despite her assertions of innocence, she was sent to jail. On May 18, Mary Easty was set free; existing records do not show why. Two days later, Mercy Lewis experienced new afflictions, and she and several other girls claimed to see Mary Eastys specter; she was charged again and arrested in the middle of the night. Immediately, Mercy Lewiss fits ceased. More evidence was gathered by deposition and during several days of examination of Mary Easty in late May. A jury of inquest considered Mary Eastys case on August 3-4 and heard testimony of many witnesses. In September, officials gathered witnesses for the trial of Mary Easty among others. On September 9, Mary Easty was pronounced guilty of witchcraft by a trial jury and sentenced to death. Also found guilty that day were Mary Bradbury, Martha Corey, Dorcas Hoar, Alice Parker, and Ann Pudeator. She and her sister, Sarah Cloyce, petitioned the court together for a fayre and equall hearing of evidence for them as well as against them. They argued that they had no opportunity to defend themselves and were not allowed any counsel and that spectral evidence was not dependable. Mary Easty also added a second petition with a plea was focused more on others than herself: I petition your honors not for my own life, for I know I must die, and my appointed time is set .... if it be possible, that no more blood be shed. On September 22, Mary Easty, Martha Corey (whose husband Giles Corey had been pressed to death on September 19), Alice Parker, Mary Parker, Ann Pudeator, Wilmott Redd, Margaret Scott, and Samuel Wardwell were hanged for witchcraft. Rev. Nicholas Noyes officiated at this last execution in the Salem witch trials, saying after the execution, What a sad thing it is to see eight firebrands of hell hanging there. In a quite different spirit, Robert Calef described Mary Eastys end in his later book, More Wonders of the Invisible World: Mary Easty, Sister also to Rebecka Nurse, when she took her last farewell of her Husband, Children and Friends, was, as is reported by them present, as Serious, Religious, Distinct, and Affectionate as could well be expressed, drawing Tears from the Eyes of almost all present. After the Trials In November, Mary Herrick testified that Mary Eastys ghost visited her and said that she was innocent. In 1711, Mary Eastys family received 20 pounds compensation and Mary Eastys attainder was reversed. Isaac Easty died on June 11, 1712.

Horse Fighting in Asia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Horse Fighting in Asia - Essay Example These fighting are conducted in stadiums or in the fields of different villages. Mostly, they are done in less populated areas. However in case of populated areas it is conducted on local road tracks, which may be harmful for citizens as well. That is why I have chosen this topic to study its context and history as well as analyzing it basis of how this game came into existence. 1.2 Horse fighting This sport is common in all parts of Asia. Horses are mainly used in fighting, kicking and biting in order to create entertainment and have a financial gain. This is mostly practiced in the countries which have more tourists each year. These people spend a lot to gain pleasure and try to earn money which leads to gambling on horse fighting. This practice is illegal one cannot harm other living being for entertainment or to have more money. There are many other ways to have these two things rather than conducting this sport. Horse fighting also involves a process and technique. Firstly, a ma re is binged by injection of hormones. Then she is taken out tied with roped and as well as padded for couple of minutes so that they can pick her scent. Then the two stallions are released and they start fighting with each other, while mare stands at a distance. It is continued for several minutes, horses keep on biting and kicking each other, unless and until one goes out of the ring. If one does not get out of ring, it can lead to death of any one. These fights are conducted on daily basis and lead to bloody wounds on the body of horses every time when they enter in a race. This is very unhealthy and risky game for their life. It have been noted that most of the horses die after the fight or they are slaughtered for meat and are shot dead if they are unable to do fighting (Amschler Wolfgang, 1935). Horses are graceful, social and intelligent creatures that don’t fight among each other. Studies indicated that when horses are shown care and are given safe and healthy environ ment, in result they become a strong bond with human beings. They can help in many social activities. However, involving horses in fight with each other is against the nature. History is past, today in this modern world one should try to make best use of all resources rather than wasting them. Training and development Horses are trained for fights on the basis of a manual of war among horses which was written by Hittite horse master in 1350 BC. This was one of the earliest manual written on horses and is in practice till today. The most difficult part in training horses is to overcome its natural instinct to flee the smell of blood, from noise and confusion related to combat. It is also made to learn unusual movement of humans and fighting with the other horse. They are made to hurt other horse though kicking, biting and striking thus they are made to serve as a weapon. It is important to develop agility and balance in the horse while fighting with the other. So in this training and development program horses are made to learn all acts of fighting (Matt Van Hoven, 2008). 1.3 Historical perspective and analysis Horse fighting is a sport since 500 years back and is mainly done by Indonesia, China, South Korea, and Philippines.
